I have been in work destroying old files this morning. The process has been both cathartic and a bit depressing simultaneously.
On the positive side, there is something quite pleasurable about clearing space in the cabinets, moving forward and so on. On the other hand, it feels a bit like important little pieces of personal history are being sent into oblivion: there goes the purchase of Lesley's first flat; off Brian's divorce goes to the incinerator.
Destroying court files is the oddest one. I have huge files dating back maybe ten years or more about things that seemed tremendously important at the time, but which are now long forgotten. I look at these files and can't help but feel that there was an awful lot of time and energy wasted by the disputing parties. And - at the end of it all - the file just goes up in smoke anyway.
