I have started auditions for "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest". It is not a process I have ever particularly enjoyed. On the one hand, it's an essential part of putting together a show (if you want the best possible production at least); but on the other hand, it inevitably means that some people are going to be disappointed. And when those people are good friends that you've worked with before, it's doubly difficult. If there's one thing I still dread, it's phoning people back to say that they haven't got the part.
The flip side of course is that, by opening a show up for auditions, you get to meet new and talented people. For me, one of the thing that keeps me fresh in shows is just that - working with new people. It keeps me on my toes - it's much harder to be lazy when you're trying to impress strangers - and it also changes the corporate atmosphere of rehearsals. Every cast behaves differently.
It is good to have a script in my hands again, and to feel the creative wheels in my head begin to slowly crank into motion.
