Day 29 I miss the analogue world.
Ok. Ok. I know that the digital world is full of advantages - limitless copies, less degradation and so on and so forth, but damn it I sometimes miss the crackle and hiss of the analogue world.
Take CDs for example. I love them. (My wife doesn't. She thinks that giving over a whole cupboard under the stairs to little plastic boxes is a waste of good shoe space.) But I digress. Sure, CDs are portable, convenient., and can survive a good chewing from Fido the Staffordshire Bullterrier. But they don't crackle for those few magical seconds before the music kicks in. The anticipation of dropping the needle, letting it bounce and find the groove was part of the ritual. Foreplay. Quite literally if you think about it.
Analogue radios too are just better. If you get bored listening to The Organist Entertains on Radio 2 on your digital set, you punch a button and you can find another station right away. But think of the fun you miss. On an analogue set, you twist the dial through static, morse code and mysterious snatches of converation and you might alight - well - anywhere. You might pick up a local radio station you didn't know was there, a talk show from France, or on a really dark night, mysterious conversations between truckers from Carlisle. Digital radio is like a plane trip from A to B. Analogue is like a train ride, with lots of lovely views outside the windows.
The Blog of Kind Acts still needs your support. You only have two more days to change the world my friends. Let's make them count. I've revived my Justiving page, and am making a donation - if you feel like being kind just click here - http://www.justgiving.com/alanbayley
