I'm off to The Stand tonight. It's a brilliant comedy club in the West End of Glasgow. I've no idea who's on, but we have a babysitter, so it should be a nice night.
I'm hoping they let me in. The last time I went to the Stand was to see Richard Herring, who's one of my favourite comedians. The first play that I directed was written by him, and my pal Iain played the lead role (the part that Richard Herring played in the production that I originally saw).
His comedy has always struck a chord because he's the same age as me, so I think lots of the points of reference are the same.
So, the last time I was at the Stand with Iain, and Richard Herring's set was great. I had a few pints too many, and with the fatal Dutch courage that generally leads to disaster, approached my hero after the gig. It all started innocently enbough.
"Hi Richard..."
"Errr hello..."
"I just wanted to say that was great...you know...the comedy and all that."
"Errr thanks..."
"I was the guy that directed 'Excavating Rita' in East Kilbride"
(Moderately blank look) ""Oh right. Great" (Glance back to his mates)
(Pointing at grinning Iain - he looks a bit drunk) "He was you!" (Iain gives Richard a little wave and, I believe, a wink) "In the play I mean. Not for real. That'd just be a stupid thing to say."
"It's just I think your stuff is great. It's really redolent for me."
"Redolent?" (Slightly more nervous look to mates).
(Touching Richard on the arm) "Yeah just with us being the same age....You know.. what with you being born in July 1967, just like me..."
(Shuffling away) "Right right...good to see you...must get back to my friends..."
(Slightly forlorn) "Love your work Richard..."
