My radishes are sprouting! I appreciate that this small snippet of news will not leave you all nominating me for the Pulitzer Prize, but in my small world it is something to shout about. I now feel qualified to talk on farming issues, and I may devote an entry soon to the unfairnesses of the Single Farm Payment.
However, with my newfound agricultural skills, there are a whole number of new worries. What about pests? Should I be netting the little delicate row of green plants? When should I thin them? Will radish scrumpers appear and swipe my crop?
I can see why farmers have the highest suicide rate. I thought it was hard taking care of a baby, but my responsibilitues have increased tenfold now that my little green children have thrust their heads through mother earth. Imagine though the crushing weight of caring for acres of turnips, or the worry lines you would develop when your crop of beetroot stays out late for the first time. No wonder they turn to the cider.
I have to go and test my ph levels now.
