Entry for May 08, 2007

I was wined and dined today at lunch time by a big city firm. Lovely people, who are helping us with some work at the moment. Their firm is so big that they actually have their own branch of Starbucks on the 4th floor of their building. We, on the other hand, sometimes buy cakes from Aulds on a Friday.
So, I had a very nice steak dinner, and held up my end of the small talk. My role appears to be (a) amusing anecdotes about colourful clients, and (b) a right on attitude towards socially important but less-profitable work. I elicited polite laughter and grave nodding. Mostly at the appropriate times too.
But, I was glad to get out afterwards.
We took the train home from Edinburgh, and were cheek by sweaty jowel with all the other commuters, packed like sardines in the rush hour carriages. Escaping from their high power jobs with high power companies. It felt like the city was exhaling. And it could have done with a swig of Listerene.
It was nice to step off the train feel familiar pavement under my feet, and walk streets that I know as well as anyone else in the world. Railwayman's Club; My First Flat; My Dad's First Home; The Place Where My Grandpa's Shop Once Stood. I have the right job. I work in the right place. I'm a round peg in a round hole.
