A full afternoon of rehearsals for "Sketchy!" is behind me. This is the first time I've directed a show for children since I did some Pantomimes for Riot Theatre about ten years ago. It is proving to be entertaining.
Today for example, one of the lines called for an actor to express disgust, and we decided that the rather prosaic line - "That's pants." - was not hitting our collective funny bone. So, we had a long discussion about the funniest way to express disgust. We thought briefly "That's plop" was quite good, rejected "That's totally Y Fronts" fairly quickly, but eventually settled on "That's poopy pants". We felt that combined references to both excrement and underwear in one simple phrase. What seven year old will be able to resist?
So, all in all, the rehearsals are rather refreshing. These are discussions you don't often encounter when doing Shakespeare.
