Entry for March 20, 2007
I am occasionally prone to bouts of middle cass aspiration. Don't tell anyone, but I like foreign films. And not just badly translated grainy movies from Denmark: although I maintain that "Some Sauce With Your Bacon?" is a classic of its type, and personally, I think the judging panel at Cannes missed a trick when it wasn't nominated for the Palm D'Or. Frankly, if you want eroticism mixed with the heady aroma of a full cooked breakfast (and let's face it, who doesn't?) there are few DVDs on the top shelf of Blockbuster that can match it.
But no, I also like arthouse stuff. It makes me feel like a am still a student, or might still yet be one In some world where the mortgage doesn't need serviced I am still nestled in the Glasgow Film Theatre on a wet Monday afternoon, watching "Betty Blue" at the £1 matinee, and feeling like I've discovered something special. And I felt a bit like that watching "Three Colours Blue", the other night: a slow, beautiful French thing, full of images and character and emotion.
I recommend. But make sure you get the student atmosphere right. Before you watch it, ensure you have a bottle of the cheapest possible red wine to wash down Asda's own brand Pasta n Sauce; turn your central heating off; slip on an extra two jumpers; settle back and relax.
You're in for a treat.
