At the second performance of Sketchy! there was a child in the audience for whom suspension of disbelief was a bit of a problem. He was about eight years old, and plainly regarded himself as a bit superior to the other children round about him.
As we got to the punchline in the "Happy Birthday" sketch, one of the actors plunged head first into a birthday cake for a bit of pie in the face humour. I appreciate that this is an old trick, but it's pretty much guaranteed to get small children giggling. Not Captain Literal however, who announced to the whole theatre: "That's not really a cake - that's shaving foam."
His piece de resistance though was commenting extremely loudly during the travel agent sketch: "She's not really a travel agent. She's just an actor." And thus he punctured the carefully constructed canopy of magic which the cast had spent weeks contructing in rehearsals.
I was tempted to slap him around the head and say "This isn't really as smack on the coupon; it's just a metaphor for my inner rage at your poor upbrininging."
I restrained myself.
