Entry for January 27, 2007
I was looking after my nephew for a few hours today, which is always good fun. I was entertaining him with a number of amusing ways to emulate the breaking of wind, and I thought we were getting on famously. He was laughing merrily as I increased the volume, but then he stopped laughing, looked me in the eye and said: "My daddy's funnier than you."
In spite of the fact that every boy's father should be his hero, I couldn't help feeling defeated. I appreciate that entertaining four year old boys should not really a competitive enterprise. Not for anyone with a balanced and healthy attitude towards life. However, things are different for a man like me. I once broke my toe playing golf as a result of some bad chipping. OK - not directly as a result of the chipping, more as a result of kicking the caddy cart in a murderous rage. I may have limped off the golf course, but by God did I teach that caddy cart a lesson.
So, instead of laughing at the innocent little remark from my nephew, I found myself planning a number of humorous surprises for his next visit, so I can wrest the title of Funniest Man in The Universe. Victory will ultimately be mine.
