Ah - it is the first Day of Kindness, and my good deed was to give a colouring book to my friends' wee boy. I made an effort to buy him it before I went up to visit. I have to say, he was largely indifferent to both me and the gift, but I have to say his parents seemed pleased, and I felt a little bit happier.
There was a small moment where I nearly didn't give him it. The drawing of the big smiling tomato and the red crayon were almost too much for me to bear. I don't like to make a two year old cry, but there are times when only a fully grown adult can do proper artistic justice to a large grinning fruit. David Hockney did not get where he is today by fearing to tread on the toes of pre-schoolers.
