Entry for 5th March, 2008 - There's a Dog in my Office!

One of my colleagues brought her new puppy into the office today. It was some form of crossbreed that looks like a ball of fluff that you'd empty out of the hoover, except it has a pink tongue and a waggy tail.
It goes by the name of Buffy (the dog, not the lawyer) and it is lovely (again the dog - I would never refer to my colleague as "it").
I henceforth am of the opinion that a dog of some sort should visit the office at least once a week. It is immediately cheering to have something in the office who is not worrying about some stupid deadline. As far as I could see, all Buffy was worried about was who she should slobber on the most. That is a nice worry to have.
I have been slogging my way through Milan Kundera's "The Unbearable Lightness of Being" (I wouldn't bother if I were you). It's an odd wee book. There aren't enough car chases for my phillistine tastes, but he does have quite a lot to say about dogs. He maintains that dogs are happy because their lives are cyclical - every day they wake up excited; every walk is a thrill; every meal is as exciting in the last one.
Human lives - maintains Milan - are linear, and we are doomed to unhappiness because we are constantly searching, constantly moving forward. I don't entirely agree. The sound of a snapping ringpull on a can of Fosters still makes me want to hump the leg of the chair.
