I am exceptionally tired tonight following last night's marathon paper-sifting session at my sister's. It's pretty depressing going through the personal papers of someone who has died. (See - that's why you tune into this blog - for inciteful statements like that last one - I'm not one to trade in banal statements of the obvious - you always get something fresh and exciting here).
I'm afraid it is depressing though. Ged's comments about the way you reflect on your own life, when someone dies are absolutely spot on. In my job, you quite often have to go through the papers of people who have died. You feel a bit guilty, because you are reducing someone's life to a little pile of papers, which (when all's said and done) are about money. It seems rather sad to reduce a person's whole existence to this.
So, I have resolved to make my own personal affairs interesting. I am going to leave little mysteries in my filing cabinet for the fingers of some eager little executy solicitor in the future. At first, I thought I might make up some mildly erotic poetry and leave it in envelopes addressed to me. But then I thought this might be better - an envelope marked "To Be Opened Only in the Event of Alan B's Death". Inside there would be a key, a photgraph of a beutiful girl and a postcard of Zurich On the back of the card there are a few words scrawled in fountain pen - "Left Luggage. Centraalstation. No14. Codeword: Adelaide."
Have you any better ideas?
