I was up at my sister’s house tonight sorting out some of my uncle’s paperwork. We didn’t get finished until about 1.30 am, so I had to drive home in the early hours. I love driving at this time. The only cars on the road are those driven by itinerant musicians returning from gigs and clandestine lovers looking for deserted lay bys.
I think it’s probably about the only time of the day or night when there’s any real thrill or magic about driving any more – you know – the kind of magic the car manufacturers hint at in their adverts, where chisel-chinned men slip their galvanised gear-stick firmly into fifth, and snake round empty country roads on their way to have sex with Claudia Schiffer and her better-looking younger sister. The reality of daytime driving is different. The roads seem to be choked with four by fours creeping along through the never-ending roadworks. And if there ever is a clear stretch of tarmac, you can be certain that it’s surveyed by speed cameras placed at hundred yard intervals, just in case you can coax your car up to the heady speed of 42 miles per hour.
