I have started a campaign of soft toy naming with my daughter. I have decided that I do not want our house to full of prosaic names like "Fluff the Rabbit" and "Spot the Dog".
For some time, she has been calling her small stuffed rabbit "Jane Austin" after considerable coaching from my sister-in-law (the Flame Haired Writing Genius). I have now decided that all of her toys will be named after famous authors.
As well as Jane Austin the Rabbit, we now have George Elliot the Cuddly Duck and Thomas Hardy the Fat and Happy Bee.
Sadly she has declined to call her large fluffy dog James Joyce, explaining to me with some annoyance: "No! He's not James Joyce. He's Toto."
