I have done it! I have finally loaded my entire album collection on to the i-pod. 6,505 songs, 215.5.days and 24.08 GB of songs. The task took the sort of discipline and self-sacrifice that, if I could apply to my job, would have resulted in me being successful rather than an object of ridicule to other lawyers everywhere. Well you know what? Show me your i-pods you smug bastards.
It really is a rather humbling experience to see what technology can do now. My CD collection looks fairly impressive I think (particularly if you are the sort of sad nerd who is impressed by that sort of thing). Several hundred CDs stacked in alphabetical order on my shelves have a feeling of weight and substance. And yet, the whole lot now lives happily on a tiny portion of the harddrive of the laptop that I am writing this on. It is a very weird thought.
It is also making me rethink my attitude to music-buying. I have always loved collecting CDs but I am beginning to feel a bit guilty about the wasted resources. All that plastic. All that energy wasted transporting them. I suspect I must be personally responsible for the demise of at least a couple of polar bears.
In reality now, all the music in the world is a few clicks away on the internet.
But I do love my collection. Surely that's worth a couple of bears. Isn't it?
