The credit crunch has hit my little corner of the world. Moatgage lending has collapsed and no-one is buying houses in my little corner of the world. For the small time lawyer (and I am sure for others everywhere) these are worrying times.
What has hit me most of all is the sense of responsibility I feel towards our staff. It is a curious feeling being a boss just now. Instead of my mind being occupied with the law, it is currently full of thoughts about how to attract business, and ensure we are all busy enough through this lean spell. Other local firms have made redundancies, but I really want to avoid it in my place.
I didn't really train to be a businessman at university though. I spent 5 years with my head in the books (in between lengthy breaks playing pool in the QM union) learning about useful topics like "The Philosophy of Law" and "Roman Law". you can only imagine how well these have equipped me to handle the cut and thrust of competition for new business in the economic downturn.
I am off now to dream up recession-busting tactics to keep our little ship afloat.
