I don't know if you've seen the opening sequence from the fiilm "American Beauty". It's a grainy handeld video of a plastic bag caught in a current of air. The bag floats around, caught in the eddies of the wind. It's such a mundane object, but there's something utterly beautiful about the scene. For me it seems to talk about the beauty that's all around us everywhere which we don't open our eyes up to.
The reason I mention it is that I had an odd moment coming back from Glasgow today. I was stopped at a big roundabout, where I stop two or three times a week (and have done for years). The sun was shining. And right in front of me was a traffic light showing red. It was sitting in front of two banks of dense foliage - one russet, and one yellow. The sun was bright, and it just looked - well - lovely. I would go so far as to say that I have never seen such a lovely set of traffic lights.
It must be my hormones or something.
