My friend Fiona M has rather unkindly suggested to me that my 40 Cups of Tea With 40 Friends experiment is one of a stream of midlife crises that I am having. She is clearly jealous of my youthful vigour, energy and restless imagination. She is also wrong. I intend to live until the age of 92, which means I can start to have my midlife crisis at the age of 46. Until then, all of my projects are to be viewed merely as adolescent pranks.
When I hit my midlife, I intend to have a proper midlife crisis. I do not regard meeting 40 old chums and sharing a brew with them as symptomatic of a crisis. When I have a crisis you will all know about it, because I shall turn up at your doors in my bright red Ferrari and will insist on showing you my nipple piercings. Until that day, I shall lie here in the rippling corn field that is my youth; bronzed and beautiful in the early morning sunlight, and gazing out across a landscape that seems limitless towards a horizon that seems impossibly distant.
If I die of a heart attack in my sleep, you may quote from this entry ironically at my funeral.
