I had to get up early this morning to go to a tribunal on the other side of Glasgow, and boy did it make me glad that I don't have to spend any serious time commuting to work. I had to get up an hour earlier than usual, and then face the trek across town at 7.30am. Even at that time the roads were choked. I know that everyone says it, but it's true: we have all gone mad. All of us commuters, in our little metal boxes that have been sold to us by lying advertising agencies. The automobile does not represent freedom at all. It represents slavery - bondage to jobs and car loans and hours and hours of stressful creeping along a smoky, smelly noisy grey ribbon of tarmac.
Maybe once - for a brief moment in the 1950s - the car represented freedom. But not now. Freedom is a brisk walk to work in the rain. Or a ride on the top level of a double decker bus. Or a late train home after a couple of drinks.
