I've had a busy weekend running about Central Scotland getting organised for "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest". I've carried out three auditions, which has been very positive, so I'm gradually filling up the vacancies in the large cast (16 actors). Everybody so far is looking really strong, and I think if I can work hard and be patient for the next two or three weeks, we'll have a first class cast.
Today, I took a trip through to Edinburgh to see the venue we'll be performing in. It's at the Edinburgh College of Arts, which is a rather grand old sandstone builing near Fountainbridge. Our performance area is not very grand. In the brochure it is described as "Sweet Studio 1". This does not do the space justice. I think that if they had called it "Dingy Student Union Bar Reeking of Piss and Stale Beer", it might have captured the atmosphere of the room better, although I appreciate that it might not exactly have the American tourists clamouring for tickets.
The stage manager's son was through with us and he accurately pointed out that the only part of the space that did not smell of pee was the toilets. Presumably the arts students prefer to keep the sanitaryware clean so that their cocaine will not get contaminated.
Actually, the bar will convert very nicely into a Fringe venue, and I am beginning to feel my Edinburgh juices beginning to flow. Roll on August.
