I have been thinking some more about Prince Charles being awarded the Royal Horticultural Society’s gold medal for services to gardening. He has been awarded the medal by the Queen at the Chelsea Flower Show this week.
It is good to see the Royals being recognised in this way. Sometimes, in my more cynical moments, I view the Royal Family as an anachronistic group of inbred spongers, who soak up taxpayers’ money which might be better spent on, say, social housing or hospitals or pay for roadsweepers.
But the sight of a man in his sixties being presented by a medal for flower-arranging by his Mum has changed all that. At last I can see the purpose that the Royal Family serves, and it makes me swell with British pride. And the totally brilliant thing about it is that I (and you) am paying their wages for attending this delightful little spectacle.
God bless the Queen and the Prince of Wales.
