I am not generally given to impulse buys (except of books and CDs, but they do not really count, as they are classed as "essentials" alongside bread, cheese and fig rolls). However, I made an exception today. I was in the local music shop buying some new strings for my guitar. (I am hopeful that the strings will transform my tunesless strumming into something wonerful by the weekend, when I plan to have a jam with The Advisor, This is fairly unlikely, but I live in hope.) I paid my six quid to Tommy the Music Shop Man, and then as I was leaving the house, I spotted something hanging above the door.
Something on special offer.
Something new and shiny.
Something that I knew in that instant that my life would never be complete without.
I don't know how many times the thought "I simply must have that mandolin" has shot through your mind, but it was certainly a first for me. But the thought was irresistable, and I am now the proud owner of a Santana mandolin (Made in China). It has eight strings, looks rather pretty, and is currently a complete mystery to me. Apart from the eight strings bit, it is really a bit like a new girlfriend I suppose. Anyway, Iook forward to unlocking her mysteries. I suspect the other residents in my house will not be just so keen.
