I have been doing my bit to save the family from the credit crunch. I have been doing the family budget. Like Gordon Brown, I feel that we are currently paying the penalty for overly loose fiscal policy during headier more confident days. I have therefore resolved that prudence will henceforth be the watchword in my household.
I came down to the dinner table last night clutching my budget bag with a carefully crafted budget speech. Well. It was a spreadsheet.
Well. Ok. It was more of a list of scribbled figures hastily jotted down on an envelope along with a scrawl in red felt tip saying "Must stop spending."
I have instructed my Significant Other that she must now stop spending money on non-essentials like clothing for the children, the mortgage and food at the weekends. I have worked out that, if we can do without these little extras, then we stand a fair chance of riding out the economic downturn at least until Tuesday (payday) when I expect confidence to return to the market, and I will then issue further instructions to spen our way out of the crisis.
